On 14 October 2008 the Mount Group RDA were delighted to welcome HRH Princess Anne, President of the RDA, to the official opening of their base at Somerby Equestrian Centre’s impressive new livery yard at Somerby, Oakham.

The Princess Royal watched a riding display, met riders, helpers and supporters of the organisation and unveiled a plaque. She also presented Pat Bishop, the Chairman of the Mount Group, with an award for her dedication to the RDA. Said Group Organiser, Di Poyser, “The visit was hugely exciting and a great honour for us acknowledging the commitment of all the volunteers who help to run the sessions so successfully.”

The Mount Group was formed 22 years ago by the late Sue Pettifor. Today the group has a membership of 180 disabled riders from across East Leicestershire and Rutland, many of whom ride every week, supported by 35 instructors and helpers, all unpaid volunteers who also raise the £20,000 annual running costs.

The six horses and ponies owned by the group have their own dedicated stable area and the needs of disabled riders were incorporated into the design of the new building at Somerby, including a hoist and moveable ramp.

The new centre also houses TOWER EQUINE VETS' veterinary clinic. Tower Equine already operates from an existing base at Grimsthorpe and the new clinic at Somerby is set to cement the practice’s strong profile in the Oakham and Melton areas. Says Office Manager, Alex Mundy, “The opening of our Somerby clinic enables us to offer more to existing and new clients in the area. The clinic has veterinary examination facilities for radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy and lameness investigation and stabling for 24hour veterinary care. We are also operating reduced visit fees in the area.”
