Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) is the most common cause of abortion in pregnant mares. It is a virus that is frequently responsible for flu like symptoms in young horses and is also highly infectious. Mares that become infected in pregnancy may abort, most commonly in the last third of pregnancy. In groups of mares, "abortion storms" can occur with a high loss rate. EHV can also cause neurological disease in pregnant mares.

There is a vaccine availableĀ that can helpĀ prevent abortion due to EHV and we would recommend all breeders to vaccinate their pregnant mares. Mares should be vaccinated during the fifth, seventh and nine months of pregnancy - a total of 3 vaccinations.

Please call the office on 01778 591082 to book your vaccinations.
